This is the beginning of the campaign to overturn Proposition 8 by 2010 and to regain the freedom to marry.
We must do everything we can to ensure that in two years we have educated enough Californians about marriage equality that there will be no doubt we will win.
Thanks to you and your support and efforts since 2001 we have moved voters in California nearly 20 points! No other group seeking justice has ever made such an unbelievably huge change in the electorate. Now we must make the final and hardest effort to get that last few points to win back the right to marry.
Our pledge here at Equality California is to do everything in our power to channel all of the incredible energy, both in California and around the nation, into the campaign to take back our rights.
So here are OUR next steps:
- EQCA, represented by NCLR, ACLU, Lambda Legal, Munger, Tolles, & Olson and the Law Office of David C. Codell, has filed a petition to invalidate Prop 8 – the fundamental rights of same-sex couples cannot be eliminated through the amendment process.
- EQCA is supporting peaceful rallies and protests to ensure we keep this injustice front and center. Find out how you can join us atwww.eqca.org/events
- EQCA will work to gather the more than one million signatures needed to overturn Prop 8 in 2010.
Here’s how YOU can help:
- Donate now– Every dollar will go to the fight to invalidate Prop 8 and the work has already started.
- Be visible. Rally at your local City Hall at 10:30 p.m. this Saturday, November 15. Scroll down for a list of participating cities and their City Hall address. Events are happening across the country at exactly the same time, to show the nation we will not give up. Find out more information >>
- Sign the pledge that you will work to help gather signatures to put a repeal of Prop 8 on the ballot in 2010.
I am so proud of the work we have accomplished together—EQCA members donated over $14 million to defeat Prop 8—$11 million more than any other organization.
We have much to bep proud of and much to learn from the campaign. But to win, it will take all of us working together to cross the finish line. We need everyone’s help. Not just yours—everyone’s. Join the fight to win back marriage today!
In solidarity,

Vice President of San Francisco Giants, Rick Mears, donates to Prop 8 Support - ?????
There’s a great video I saw on San Francisco IAM on Proposition 8. It shows both sides of the issue and what it means for same sex couples in California. It’s a must see for those concerned about the issue.
I’d recommend checking it out: http://www.sanfranciscoiam.com/videos/d80e34400efa
They also got a lot of other interesting video journalism video.
We should all be very careful about throwing rocks at people because they donated to Prop 8. In a democracy we do not fight our opponents by attempting to stop their participation in the democratic process. That is gang mentality.
.
We must defeat our opponents in the ballot box (through the legislative system) or through the California Supreme Court (the judicial system)
.
In this struggle for our civil rights we must always remain within the boundaries of behavior that is supportive of our democracy, our political system, the laws of the nation and the intent of free and open democracies.
.
The gay and lesbian community, above all others, must avoid witch hunts, the very process used historically in this country to demonize gay and lesbian Americans. We cannot degrade ourselves and begin using the same techniques. We must rise above such tactics and reject the call of those of our community who want to drag our cause down into the mud of dirty politics. We need to leave that behavior to the Republicans.
It would be tempting to stoop to a "they-do-it-so-we-will-too" answer to SSSF, and point to the tactics of the Prop. 8 supporters, which included threats of outing and boycott of the Prop. 8 opponents, which are well documented.
Still, there is a germ of truth in what SSSF says. The process is all we have, in our society, and we must rise above base tactics.
However, I am grateful for those who tell me, as an individual with individual dollars to spend, where my money will support those who would deny the basic human rights legally decided by the California Supreme Court to me or those I care about. If this country is at least partially founded upon free enterprise, I get to choose where I spend my hard-earned dollars. I get to vote with my gay money, and it is not made of 3 dollar bills.
So as a personal matter, not as "gang mentality," I can vote with my money. I appreciate those who give me the data for my choices. Those who disagree may equally choose how to spend their money. That is as much a part of the American system as the ballot box or the judicial system, and while I will support those other systems through peaceful means, I may support the economic vote as well.
Rick Mears is mormon, so of course he supported prop 8... He is just one of many Giants VPs
